Ross McPherson AM
Executive Chairman

Ross is the fourth generation of the McPherson family to lead the company, having previously served as Joint Managing Director since 1985. Before joining the family company Ross worked as a journalist in Australia and London and practised as a commercial lawyer. He remains Editor-in-Chief of the group’s newspapers.
Following the dramatic consolidation of the news media in Australia during the 1980s and 90s (and the subsequent dearth of industry sharing) Ross focused the group’s attention on the International News Media Association (INMA) as a source of ideas and inspiration. He served on the board for two decades and became the first Australian president of INMA, which now boasts some 25,000 members in 800 companies across 94 countries. He considers it the thought leader of the industry and credits INMA with assisting many of the group’s innovations.
Ross is a former deputy chairman of SPC Ltd and a former Deputy Chancellor at the University of Melbourne, from where he initially graduated in law. He also holds a Masters of Law from London University. He has had many industry and community engagements and in 2019 was awarded a Member of Australia for significant service to print and digital media, and to the community.
John Etherington AM
Director and Audit Chairman

John is a Chartered Accountant with 28 years experience in public practice, including sixteen years as a partner in Deloitte where he held both senior leadership positions and provided audit and advisory services to a range of public, private and not for profit organisations. His specialisation was in assisting rapidly growing Australian companies.
He has held and continues to hold both Board and Audit Committee Chair roles on a range of listed and public corporations, including Pental Ltd, UCA Funds Management and the National Heart Foundation and is currently National Treasurer of the Heart Foundation. In 2019 John was awarded a Member of Australia for significant service to the community, and to the Uniting Church in Australia.

Ella is currently the Deputy CEO of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, having previously held roles as Deputy Commissioner at the Victorian Public Sector Commission and Chief Operating Officer of the Victorian School Building Authority.
She has Masters qualifications in Communications, Business Administration and Law.

As Fairfax’s general manager of production he oversaw the introduction of its largest printing plants and ran national distribution. As director, group publishing he led magazine publishing, group sales and ran marketing and information services. He was the editor of The Sydney Herald for five years and later Fairfax’s head of marketing for seven years.
He has been involved with the launch of about 40 consumer apps since launching Fairfax’s first app. He invests in and advises a range of start-ups and sits on several advisory boards. He served on the board of the International News Media Association for nine years and continues to chair many of the group’s summits in Europe, US and Asia and, as INMA’s Digital Platform Initiative Lead, offers valuable insights into the most recent global transformation initiatives.
